M1917A1 “Kelly” Helmet

The M1917A1 “Kelly” helmet is a modified version of the M1917 “Brodie” helmet used by US troops during the First World War. It was issued from the 1930s to 1943 when it was almost entirely phased out by the M1. The helmet saw extensive use at Pearl Harbor, the Philippines, and Guam during the Japanese attacks on December 7th and 8th, 1941 as well as use stateside with soldiers training until they were equipped with M1 helmets.

The M1917A1 replaces the riveted-in felt pad and net suspension and leather chinstrap on the M1917, to a screw-in leather suspension with a web chinstrap.
